Question:

Do you have any tips on using Aquascape putty underwater?

Answer:

Aquascape putty does not act like a glue so will need to be treated differently than using products such as superglue.

The first thing with Aquascape is to make sure that equil parts of both sticks in the packet are used and that they are mixed together thoroughly. If the two parts are cold or feel like they will be hard to mix together they can be warmed up first to soften them. To do this we recommend wearing latex or nitrile gloves to protect your hands as the putty can become sticky. Microwave the two components for approximately 5-10 seconds, take care when picking them up as they can become hot, this will make them easy to work. Please bear in mind that this will also reduce the set time of the Aquascape so it is best to plan how and where you want to use it in the aquarium before starting. Mixing in small batches is also often easier than trying to do half or the whole pack in one go.

Turn off curculation pumps that are pointing towards the area that you are going to use the putty as this may make it difficult to use and could result in the Aquascape being overworked, clouding the water.

Make sure your hands are dry, take a piece of mixed aquascape at the desired size and roll in to a ball. If you are attaching a coral it is sometimes easiest to hold the coral upside down at the water surface, push the ball of putty on to the bottom of the coral base (dont worry about working it on to the base at this stage), then push the coral down in to place where you want it. Make sure that the rock you are pushing down on to is stable so that you do not create a landslide. As you push the coral down the aquascape will squash down and squeeze out the sides, this excess putty can be used to stabalise the coral whilst it dries and smooth the joint between the coral base and the rock you are attaching it too. When doing this do not rub the putty, push it back on itself to fill any gaps. If the coral is not stable use a small piece of rock or suitable prop to hold it in place as the putty sets, cable ties can work well if attaching to a piece of branching rock.

On small corals or frags the same method as above can be used. Alternatively the ball of Aquascape can be placed on the rock in the aquarium and then the small coral or frag pushed into it. The excess putty can then be shaped by pushing in to it.

The key with using products such as aquascape is to do a few things at a time, let it set fully then carry on with the next stage. If you try to do too much in one go it is inevitable that you will get a few bits in place how you want them and then when doing the next one you will accidentally knock off one of the others.
