How far open should i have the air intake on this skimmer - ALL the way ?. Is this the optimum position ? Or should it be kept at the 1 o'clock position ? Please help.
To explain why we tend to recommend that the tap on a Deltec skimmer is set to the 1-2 oclock position
The orange and grey air tap position on Deltec skimmers will control how much air is allowed into the venturi and therefore into the skimmer.
There are two things to consider at this point
1 - air volume
2 - bubble size.
Closing the tap to the 1-2 oclock position will reduce the overall amount of air that goes into the skimmer but also create a slight pressure difference at the venturi. This negative pressure tends to form finer bubbles.
If you halve the bubble diameter then you double the surface area.
There is therefore a balance between getting a setting which reduces the amount of air but increases the surface area for reaction - this is normally about the 1-2 oclock position.
MCE300
The MCE300 is an exception to this rule.
On this model you should start with the tap fully closed. At this point the impellor will be pushed forward by the water and the amount of noise will increase as the pins rub against the front housing. Slowly open the tap until the noise just stops as this is the point where the pinns are just missing the housing - This is normally the point where you get the most air and best performance.
