Question:
Hi Stu,
Can you please have a word with your contacts @ D&D regarding a Deltec Skimmer MCE600 I’m having problems with.
Basically, my skimmer recently went wild after I put in melafix marine; it started pouring water into the skimmer cup at a rapid rate so I turned the skimmer off until the melafix settled down as I’ve heard the oils in melafix can sometimes do this. Previous to this I’ve had problems when I turn off the skimmer to empty the protein out of the skimmer cup and it will not turn back on.
I’ve cleaned the whole skimmer with water/vinegar mix as stated on their website and then rinsed it with RO water but this still didn’t solve the problem and one thing I’ve noticed which I noticed before was the impeller inside the pump is magnetised and when I put the impeller back into the pump unit it appears to be sticking to one side via magnetisation and is not sitting or spinning correctly. I’ve read up on this before being a fault with the impeller or pump but I cannot find a clear indication which one.
Can you please ask your friends @ D&D if the problem is with my impeller or pump or both and which one needs replacing as I’m reading to believe the pump is an old model as the new one sits in a ceramic surround instead of being positioned by the magnets. It’s been 3 days since the skimmer has been turned off and I’m also not too sure how long I can have this turned off without affecting the marine life.
Thanks mate
Andy
Answer:
Hi Andy
Melafix is well known for causing skimmers to over foam, I'm personally not a fan of the stuff.
Refrain from using it and run some carbon to help remove substances that are affecting the waters
surface tension and causing the over foaming event.
With regards to the impeller please check that the ceramic shaft isn't broken and it is sitting in the
rubber grommet at the bottom and locates in the top grommet when you push the front suction
plate back onto the pump.
If the shaft doesn't locate in the grommets or is broken the impeller will be pulled over to the sides
of the impeller aperture by the stator windings and will not spin.
Please see the links below for info on how to position the shaft so it locates within the grommets.
Also make sure the air venturi and the intake slots(found around the top grommet) in the suction
plate are clean.
hope this helps Tony
