Is Red sea and H20+ the same?

Question:

Hi

Is your new salt the same as the Red Sea Coral Pro?

Answer:

Hi

The simple answer is no, the salts are different with different chemistry.

Here is some background on our salt.
During the development David Saxby our MD investigated the main competitive salts that were on the market, which he had laboratory tested to confirm the exact formulations. He then used his 3500g reef system as a test bed to see how the corals reacted to various different formulations and what needed to be added in the way of boosting chemicals to bring the salts back to optimum levels for growth and stability.

Some of the strongest results were obtained using natural salts made in the Middle East, rather than totally synthetic blends, giving good coral responses and stable levels but still requiring the addition of boosting chemicals to keep the tank in true natural balance.

We made a decision that we wanted for our own salt to use an natural evaporative base salt with all the benefits of having the trace elements at natural levels and so this meant having the salt made in the Middle East where the water could be drawn from the Red Sea – a true coral ocean. As some of the trace elements in natural sea water are at levels of less than 1 gram per tonne and we felt that the ability to get these completely right in every batch was a massive positive for a high quality reef salt.

We found a salt manufacturer that we could work with who had produced very consistent 1 tonne sample batches for us to trial but we also needed the facilities to pack and ship the salt on a commercial level. We therefore came to an agreement with the Israeli company Red Sea to use the packing plant on which they fill their own branded salt which gave us the packing control that we wanted and extra volume for their own facility.

In the early stages in the UK this led some of our competitors to make statements that we were simply rebadging Red Sea salt as we both use a similar bucket skeleton. This is a result of the fact that there are a limited number of suitable bucket manufacturers in the region and only one who is able to carry out the "in mould printing" for our complicated design.

These rumours were soon shown to be false as the parameters and balance of our salt are completely unique compared to any other salt on the market and even with simple hobby test kits it was obvious that this was the case.

This can also be seen in the updated independent UK reef salt poll

Also in the Canadian poll where we are still the number one reef salt. Instant ocean is the number one salt however it is a very established brand and is a lower cost unboosted, (fish), salt and therefore cannot be compared. Reef Crystals, the reef salt from the same manufacturer, is less than half our figure.

In the next 3-4 months we will be bringing out a complete series of test kits which will also allow you to show the differences and that we have natural levels of iodine and potassium – something that is not present in all salts.

I hope this answers your question

Stuart
