Question:
Hi Tony. Last year I got in touch with u re above regarding the noise
of my 600 deltec skimmer. I done as u advised and bought a new pump.
Still same noise. Today I took it off to clean it and sat it on the
front of the tank and before cleaning I switched it on and it was
silent.
The position I had it was at the back of the tank against a wall. Do u
think the noise is vibrating off the wall. Could u give me any advice
how to stop this vibrating. I have already tried a polystiring tile
with no effect.
Answer:
Hi John
Yes i remember your noise issue, generally we always advise looking at any
vibration or resonance issue before looking to buy a new pump.
Have you got the noise dampening strips on the bottom of the pump?
The places to look for noise are the sliding plates within the skimmer, the
pump isn't vibrating against the side of the body and that the skimmer body
isn't vibrating against the tank.
When the skimmer is running push down on the sliding plate that comes to rest
against the pump, any change?
Also place your hand on the skimmer body and push against the tank slightly.
Basically you need to look for any part of the skimmer that could be vibrating, that said
there are occasions that resonant frequencies of skimmer and aquarium are very close
and noise becomes amplified. This kind of resonance is quite hard to track down and
cure as there is no fault as such.
The other thing to try is running the whole skimmer in a bucket of salt water, this way
you can rule any buzzing against the tank and make it easier to track down what is vibrating.
Regards and best wishes Tony
