Question:
hi,
i recently purchased a new impeller from yourselves which also comes with a new ceramic shaft and red bushes as my mce600 was making a rather loud annoying hum. I was hoping this would fix the problem as i have done everything else your site suggests to rectify this problem.
I ran the pump in bucket of water and could hear the vibrations which weren’t as loud but still very noticeable, so i’m assuming their must be something else wrong. I did notice a few marks on the magnet on the impeller which i received from yourselves but nothing to drastic so i don’t think that would be the cause.
i also didn’t notice any marks or scratches inside the pump casing where the impeller spins. The pump had also been running in white vinegar for 24h to remove any calcium deposits.
Any further help would be greatly appreciated.
Answer:
Hi James
There are a couple of things to check if the pump is noisy.
1. Check that the air tap and venturi is totally clear of any deposits that may cause a reduction in air.
If the air is restricted by some margin the impeller will move forward within the pump and rub the suction
plate. The pump will also run noisily if you ran it in a bucket without the air line as this will result in the
same noise due to lack of air to the pump. The pump would have also be noisy if it was run in fresh water
rather than seawater.
2. Check that the suction plate is square when installing as if not the grommets may get twisted and cause
the impeller to run off centre
3. Check that the grommet housing haven't been worn either in the suction plate or the pump stator, if these
are worn the grommets will be loose and cause the impeller to move around inside the stator. If these are worn
the suction plate and/or the stator will require replacement.
4. Check the airline hasn't been caught on pump installation thus restricting air and increasing noise.
5. Check the pump has the rubber noise reduction feet fitted to the bottom.
6. Check all sliding plates and the cup is secure and not vibrating against the body or pump
7. Check that the skimmer body isn't resonating against the aquarium.
Hope the above suggestions help.
regards Tony
