Some people use a timer so that it can only run for so long during the day
or night to prevent any chance of the float switch sticking on and over
dosing the tank with kalk.  This is just for peace of mind especially if you
are away etc.

Some people run stirrers 24/7 and some only run them at night.  This is
because the ph of your tank will be lower and the kalk will not impact so
much on the ph.  Also it will help to maintain the ph through the night when
the lights are off.  You have to be careful not to add too much kalk as you
can easily over shoot the ph level especially in a small tank or in the
summer when it is hot and evaporation is higher and the tank is being topped
up more regulary.

It is possible to run the stirrer all the time linked up to the top up
system and it may be wise to run a bypass round the kalkstirrer.  This means
that you put say 30% of the top up water through the stirrer and the rest
bypasses the stirrer and straight into the sump.  This way you are not
adding so much kalk into the tank, but still have some benefit of kalk.

As your tank is not so large you will need to be careful as kalk will easily
raise the ph if it is added to fast or too much in one go.  When I ran a
stirrer I had my float switch set so only very small amounts were added at
any one time, but my tank was far larger than yours.

If you are struggling to maintain calcium or ph then maybe you need to check
that your calcium reactor is set up correctly and that the tank is being
serviced etc.

If you do fit a stirrer then keep an eye on the ph and monitor this.  Having
a computer with ph probe will allow you to do this with little effort.
