Infinity light with broken cover glass

Hi, I have a Giesemann Infinity Light Unit 2 x 250W HQ1 & 4 x 54w Actinic Tubes and the glass cover for one of the HQ1 bulbs has shattered (we found glass in the tank and on investigation saw that the glass 'shade' over the HQ1 bulb had broken. We had a new piece cut and fitted but within 20 minutes that too had shattered leading us to believe that the cover is 'toughened'. Are you able to supply / order a replacement cover as we need this as a matter of urgency. A prompt response would be appreciated.

Hi Pauline,

Sorry to hear about your cover glass breaking.

This can happen sometimes if a fish splashes water onto the hot cover glass and the cooler water shatters the glass. Check that your halide is not too close to the water surface or if you have some larger fish then you may need to put cover glasses onto the tank itself, to prevent this happening again.

You can't use standard glass as this will not take the heat and will not offer any UV protection. The glass covers supplied with the light acts as a uv lens as well to protect the fish and corals from uv burning. If you run without this then the corals will burn - especially those near the surface and you fish could possibly go blind.

You need to fit asap a new cover to the light. These cost £60.48 for each cover glass to cover one halide bulb. These are tempered glass and are supplied by Giesemann who built your light.
