Flushing Flow Restrictor on RO Unit

Question:

I have recently purchased one of these units. I have connected the 'Easy Flush' flow restrictor as per the instructions. However, I am unsure if the restrictor should be open or closed during operation. Can you please advise me on the correct use of this restrictor.

Answer:

I get a number of questions on this so I must have done a poor job when writing the instructions.

The idea of the flushing valve is to allow you to flush out any slime or bacteria that would otherwise build up in the membrane housing and would reduce the life of the membrane.

When the tap is inline with the body of the restrictor then this is in bypass mode and there is no restriction to flow of the water and so the body gets flushed as it is easier for the water to just bypass the membrane.

When the tap is set at 90 degrees to the body then the restrictor is brought into play.

This is just like any other ball valve except when in the closed position there is a specific hole or restriction through the ball valve relative to the flow rate of the membrane. This restriction causes a back pressure which allows some water through but also forces most of the water through the membrane.
