Correct amount of Rowaphos

Question:

From what I have read there is no hard rule to measure the amount and  length of time to calculate. I have a 90 gal tank + 35 gal sump
Having been using for for Rowa for 1 year, but never figured out the correct amount to add in fluidised reactor. Have used approx. 250 ml.

Had a Hagen test kit poor results, now using a Salifert. Filled reactor a week  ago test out water, as far as I can see0 ppm / 0 mg/l. Just tested water  in tank seems to be at o ppm now. Love the product would like to figure  out the right amount, any suggestion?
I would like to use less and change more often, since 250 ml not tumbling  is equal to about 2" of media in my 150 Phosban reactor, and I think the  less the amount the less likely it will cake and should tumble better

Answer:

Hi Bob

The amount of time the Rowaphos will last will depend on the volume of media
used, the amount of Phosphate
within the system and the amount of Phosphate added daily with your food
ration.

The link below will give a guide to the amount of media to use to remove
3ppm of PO4

I take it you are running a reef aquarium and using units of US gallons?

If so 125ml of product will remove 3ppm of PO4 from your system, as your PO4
will be in very low numbers it may
take weeks or months to exhaust 125ml with 3ppm PO4. It is important to set
the contact time within the reactor for
a slow fluidization(not a boil) and monitor the PO4 of the effluent over
time. When you see PO4 in the effluent it will
indicate the end of service life for your aquarium and the Rowaphos will
need to be changed.

You can then incorporate this time scale into your maintenance regime rather
than testing the effluent after every media
change if feeding and stocking remain constant there after.

I would say as a rough gauge the Rowaphos should last between 4-6 weeks but
as i say it really depends on your own system
stocking and feeding regimes.

Hope this helps

Tony
